SYLLABUS
Theoretical Part of the Course
In order students to understand the importance of storytelling images and the iconographic program, 3 illustrations are selected and analyzed, from antiquity to the present day, which operate in multiple ways. They give information about their cultures, their artists and the painting values of their times. They offer for the intelligent “setting up” of their heroes, the perfect operation of the script, and they praise the aesthetics of the illustrated stories. These illustrations are:
The Tomb of Nefertari, the great wife of Ramses II, of the 19th dynasty of the new kingdom of Egypt, discovered by the Egyptologist Ernesto Schiaparelli in 1904 and located in the valley of the queens on the west bank, in Luxor, Egypt.
The 22 baroque paintings on the “famous life and heroic deeds of Mary of Medici” wife of King Henry IV of France by the Flemish painter Peter Paul Rubens in the 17th century, which were made to decorate his western gallery Luxembourg Palace in Paris and now housed in the Louvre Museum.
The illustrated story “comics” by the French designer Philippe Drouye “Salabo” of the Carthaginian priestess of the goddess Tanit, “daughter of Amilka Varka” which was first published in the magazine “Metal Hurlant” in 1977 and was based on the title 1862 in France.
Laboratory Part of the Course
In the laboratory part of the course the emphasis is given to the students’ experimentation on the style of narration, writing, and the aesthetics of their works. Also, in the interesting performance of the script in image and in terms of the quality of their comics.
